SriLankan Airlines was the first commercial airline to operate to Male’ International Airport (now Velana International Airport) after it opened in 1960. Initially starting out with a 50 seater AVRO aircraft, the airline has strengthened its presence in the Maldives with multiple flights a day including both single aisle and twin aisle Airbus aircraft and has now become the largest foreign carrier operating in the Maldives. Over the last five and a half decades SriLankan Airlines has silently contributed to the development and eventual boom of the tourism industry in the Maldives and is currently one of the largest carriers of inbound tourist traffic in to the country.
On 1st December 2016, the airline made history in the Maldives once again by becoming the first international airline to commence scheduled passenger flights to Gan Island in Addu City - the southernmost atoll of the country. This new flight to GAN creates a great opportunity to bring the rest of the world to Addu and in doing so, SriLankan Airlines hopes to emulate the growth experienced by Malé
